Caged In essays Caged In: Breaking Through the Walls of Oppression Held back, caged, strangled, deprived, and hurt. These words begin to describe the feelings that are stressed in Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper. Women have made incredible progress since 1892 when Gilmans short story was written. Charlotte Perkins Gilman knew that women were desperate for gender equality. In The Yellow Wallpaper, the narrator tries desperately to free an imaginary, imprisoned woman from that repellant, almost revolting wallpaper (Gilman 227). In The Yellow Wallpaper, Gilman uses personification to give the wallpaper a life of its own and to be an overbearing symbol of female oppression. Furthermore, to understand Gilmans goals, we must first try to understand her as a person. This story is not just something Gilman conjured up with a creative mind. This story is a semi-autobiographical account of what she went through as a bed-ridden wife and mother suffering from depression. At one point in the story Gilman referred to her own neurologist: John says if I dont pick up faster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fall(Gilman 229). By the time Gilman was writing The Yellow Wallpaper, she had already been cured of her depression and began focusing her efforts on feminism since she believed the oppression of women was the cause for these mental illnesses. Moreover, Gilmans feminist beliefs had always bled through her writing, and The Yellow Wallpaper would hold true to this form. From the beginning of the story the narrator was introduced to the reader as a woman who was seemingly trapped in a room full of boredom and time due to her husbands treatment for her mental illness. She has been banned from any creative escape such as writing or painting. She consistently received child-like treatment from her husband John: "...

Freedom of Choice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Freedom of Choice - Essay Example In some stories, the choices are more obvious than others. Updike’s â€Å"A & P† focuses entirely on the events leading up to Sammy’s life-changing decision. Although he does say, â€Å"it seems to me that once you begin a gesture it's fatal not to go through with it† (Updike 18), his original decision was based on his own personal worldview, in his appreciation of beauty. Although Sammy only makes a single choice in this short story, it is the choice that feels right to him. His manager even tries to persuade him to take another path, but Sammy refuses. In fact, in this case, to recant his decision would be to allow someone else to choose his fate. Although he knows his choices will make life hard, he deliberately chooses not the path that will make things hard, but the path that will ensure he does not turn into the story’s final image: Lengel, â€Å"His face†¦dark gray and his back stiff, as if he'd just had an injection of iron† (Upd ike 19). Sammy is choosing his own freedom, along with all its attendant difficulties. Steinbeck’s â€Å"The Chrysanthemums† paints a picture of a thirty-five year old woman who might seem somewhat trapped in her own life. However, the story shows that Elisa is still a strong woman who can make choices for herself. Although she says of the life of a tinker in a wooden caravan, â€Å"It must be very nice. I wish women could do such things† (Steinbeck 258), she knows that she can do anything the visitor can do. Further, she has the power of her magic â€Å"planters’ hands†.

Hematology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Hematology - Essay Example In the blood system, Pluripotent haematopoetic cells become any type of cell. The type of a cell to become is determined by pluripotent cells that differentiate it in a wise way. 1 Proliferation is multiplication of blood cells in a human being. When an embryo is being developed, formation of blood takes place in the yolk sac in aggregate of blood cells. Blood formation takes place in the liver, spleen and lymph nodes and development goes to advance stages. Eventually, the task of blood formation is taken by bone marrows in the entire body system when they develop. However, proliferation of lymphoid cells usually occurs in the secondary lymphoid organs such as lymph nodes, spleen and thymus. In adult, haematopoiesis usually takes place in marrows of long bones like femurs and also in ribs and sternum where we have spongy bones. At times, spleen, liver and thymus recommence their haematopoietic function commonly known as extramedullary haematopoiesis. 2 Differentiation is a process whereby cells acquire a type in regard to haemopoiesis. During differentiation, cell morphology changes drastically although generic material still remain the same with some few exceptions. In many aspects of cell physiology, differentiation involves changes in regard to shape, metabolic activities, polarity, size, and responsiveness to signals whereas gene expression profil

The Immigration Act of 1924 declared this, â€Å"the number of each nationality who may be admitted annually is limited to 2 per cent of the population of such nationality resident in the united states according to the census of 1890† (A). There are many reasons why this was passed. Those Reasons being; the loss of American jobs, the inability to easily assimilate immigrants, and the prejudice of the groups and people of the time.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One reason for the passing of the Immigration Act of 1924 is the loss of American jobs. Immigrants of the time came to the United States looking to increase his lot in life, to become a better more wealthier man. â€Å"The standard of living of the working classes of the United States has been and still is superior to that of the nations which have furnished the bulk of the immigrants† (C). The only problem with the immigrants coming to America to work was the fact that there simply was not enough jobs for both the unemployed American workers and the immigrants. This causes a problem for the Americans as the immigrants take lower wages than that of the average worker. Naturally the business owners will hire the cheaper labor thus leaving the American worker unemployed. Many labor organizations such as the American Federation of Labor and the Junior Order of United American Mechanists (H) backed the act for just this reason; American jobs were going to immig rants fresh off the boat.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The immigrants getting these ‘American jobs’ were not, and did not in some cases want to be easily assimilated. â€Å"These alien peoples are temperamentally and racially unfitted for easy assimilation; that they are living in an age two or three centuries behind ours. They are white, they can read a few lines, and they have a few dollars - so in they come. We need three generations to educate, to crossbreed with Western strains and to assimilate a large number of those that we have here now† (F). Education seemed not to be the only problem. Many educated second generations immigrant men were still, racially and temperamentally, part of their nationality. Therefore the conclusion of this is that the United States needs to limit the amount of immigrants it lets in every day, week, month, and year. â€Å"The rank and file of these unassimilated aliens still live mentally in the ghetto or as peasants on the great estates.

Investigatory Projects

The problem, however, is that these chemicals are expensive and pose harm to the environment. This study aims to develop an environment friendly, safe, and effective yet cheap mosquito repellent by using weeping pillow leaves and pine cones. The activity is not success but it shows the different scientific processes to be followed in doing an experiment. Mosquitoes are one of the most harmful creatures In the world, not only to humans but also to other land vertebrates as well. They carry viruses that are sometimes fatal when transmitted to humans.Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are common In are tropics (Merit Encyclopedia, 1969). Mosquito-borne diseases are transmitted to the body of the host through mosquito bites and contaminated food. The saliva of the mosquito is sometimes infected with pathogens. These pathogens are transmitted to the hosts when they are bitten by the mosquitoes. Common viral infections caused by Mosquitoes are more pronounced in the larval stages and can r esult from the ingestion of contaminated food. Mosquito- borne diseases include malaria, dengue or break bone fever, fallacies, yellow fever, and H- fever (Melts, et.AI,. 1971 Insecticides are recommended to combat these disease -carrying pests and â€Å"trouble makers. † Insecticides are widely used as chemicals In controlling pests, which are either organic or chemically synthesized. The plant kingdom is a vast source of naturally occurring and selective insecticides portions of plants such as the flower, leaves, steam, or roots (Colliers, 1972). Insecticides include nicotine, rotenone, preterits, and sabbatical. Some have been used by humans for a long time. As early assess, nicotine was used as an insecticide in the form of a crude extract from tobacco.Nicotine's alkaloid can be obtained from the leaves and stems of Nicotine Tobacco (Inupiat, 1976). Nicotine is harmful to humans though it doesn't effect the plants when applied . Rotenone, the most active of the six alkalo ids , is harmful to man but a very effective poison against various insects (Abbey, 1972). On the other hand , essential oils from eucalyptus and psychophysical were use as effective mosquito insecticide or repellent (Smith. 1996). A research made on the subject found that weeping willow (Saliva Babylonian) leaves contain essential oils similarly found in eucalyptus (Antonio, 1984).Pinups Insular, commonly known as Shaky pine, is found in Khakis hills and Motorman, in the hills of Burma and in Central Luzon. It is a valuable source of resin turpentine. It grows up to 15 m (1 50 feet) and has very fine, grass-like needles (Tree of the World). It contains alkaloid, which is an ingredient in most insecticides. A. Materials Half a kilogram of weeping willow leaves were gathered from the Philippine Science High School (SSH) campus. Two and Half kilograms of pine cones came from Baggie. B. Methods 1. Extraction and DistillationForty grams of weeping willow leaves were extracted five times for 10 hours using the sloshes apparatus and titleholder as the solvent. Then two kilograms were extracted in five occasions for 10 hours each using the same apparatus and Covent as the extraction for the weeping willow leaves. After each extraction, the solution was gathered, and distilled for an hour to obtain the extract. The extract was then stored in a cold place. 2. Culture of Wriggler Stagnant water was collected from the creek and from the SSH fish pond. The water was placed in basins and was left for two to three weeks.

Play Flourishing in Elizabethan Era and a Review of...

The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus is a play written by Christopher Marlowe. Christopher Marlowe is an English playwright who lived and created during the rule of Elizabeth I. The whole period of her reign, from 1558 to 1603, is called Elizabethan age and is known for being the greatest period in the history of English literature, so as the golden age of English drama. Since the number of plays was growing, lots of theaters were opened and made art more available to average people. Historical events influenced plays and made Marlowe to ‘rebel’ against social order and Christianity through his play The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. Queen Elizabeth is a member of Tudor dynasty and was a queen of England and Ireland for almost forty-five years. She loved art and encouraged development of literature, which resulted with a play flourishing. Lots of playwrights were active back then, such as George Peele, Robert Greene, John Lyly, Anthony Munday, Thomas Kyd, and George Gascoigne, but the most famous and most important ones are William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. Since the population of city was growing, playwrights were having larger audience for their plays. Because of so many playwrights who wrote important plays and introduced new types of plays to people, for example, the first history plays were written, and who â€Å"gave to the Elizabethan drama some elements of classical form and contributed to the great outputting of literature in the 1590s’’ (â€Å"The
